Generative AI impact on art and creativity

Today let’s look at Generative AI’s impact on art and creativity. I have always loved art. I loved to draw and mold as a kid and took inspiration from the greats like Stan Lee, James Kirby, and Steve Ditko. These were the giants that inspired countless artists around the world and opened new possibilities to create and share their work with a wider audience.

The emergence of generative AI has been seen as a threat to these kinds of creative jobs, including those of copywriters, graphic designers, and even artists. Just like mechanical robots replaced laborious repetitive work previously done by human workers, AI is now eyeing jobs that require more artistic and imaginative skills.

AI-based image-generation techs like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable diffusion can create striking images of objects, people, and locations based on user prompts and requests. The Generative AI models are trained on already existing datasets of human-made images, which allows them to generate new images based on the art style and patterns that they find. This has raised ethical concerns over AI art, and the question of ownership & authorship is largely unresolved.

Moreso, artists see this advancement as a threat to their livelihood. For example, as a 3D artist working at a gaming company, AI services can quickly mash up landscapes, 3D character models, and that you might have never thought of. With this in mind, the company could easily half its workforce and invest in an AI-based generation service.

There is also the daunting question of AI art authenticity, ownership, and the role of human input in the creative process. While some take it as having the potential to revolutionize and extend human creativity some see it as the loss of the human touch in artistic expression. There is already a growing debate on this, with a group of artists taking their fury online and launching a campaign against AI, calling for its ban.

We always found comfort in telling ourselves that creativity and imagination were only in the human domain and could never be replicated. The truth is, it’s already here with us now, and it’s not going away. My advice to artists & designers would be to learn how to use AI tools to leverage its benefits while still maintaining their creative vision and authenticity. Get your seat belt on, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. ADAPT OR DIE.
